The History of the Darwin City Soccer Club By Joe Flynn Disclaimer: This is all from memory so as far as I can say most is correct though some of the events may not be 100%. The Darwin City soccer team has a history that is older than the current team. During the 1980s there was also a City team that played in the old soccer league against teams that are still going today in the Darwin Premier League. After disbanding around 1990 some of the old team came together one Sunday for a game in the park early in 2000. They decided to reform in the Darwin Soccer League (now the Territory Amateur Soccer League) a 9-a-side, 70 min game, league played at the Italian Club. The 2000 season Our list for this season was:
Most of the team was only signed up less than a week before the first round and we were still waiting for the team strip to arrive from down south. Luckily we were given the bye in the first round and had a bit more time to prepare. We missed the pre season comp and got straight into it in the second round playing against the reigning cup winners Uni Rangers. Without our full squad at this stage we went in as clear underdogs and went behind early and trailed 1-0 at half time. Stewie McGill's save after Uni were awarded a penalty kept us in it. The second half saw some brilliance from our key striker Blair Cheshire who despite being twice the size as most of the Uni defence dribbled four of them from half way to level the scores. Again we went behind this time 3-1 but again up steps Blair with a 40 yard chip and Brian Coulehan sneaking in on the right to end the game at 3-3. Our second game I think was a 3-1 win against Jingili and I cannot remember any of the details of that match. Our first loss was an ugly match were we were put out of the game due to a history between opposing players that spilled over and resulted in a 10 match suspension to one of our mid fielders Jerry. He was red carded in the first half and with only an inexperienced team on the park we went down 4-2. I cannot remember the name of the team, which has subsequently dropped out of the competition. In our first meeting with the owners of the ground, Darwin Azzuri, we were considerably beaten 6-1 with our only highlight being a long range "Thunderbolt" from Mark Baker. After this game the Coach Frank pulled a few strings and recruited a number of experienced players that he knew from his days coaching the Cubs in the Singapore league. From this point on the season went from good to better with Darwin City taking all before them and handing out a thrashing to any team not up to the standard. Even Azzuri were not spared being beaten 5-0 in our second encounter to level the scores. All five goals in this match were good enough for a Premier league highlight reel with Shane Thompson cutting a path from defence and scoring the opener. Followed up by Blair, Locky, Terry, and Louie all scoring absolute rippers. We finished the season being unbeaten from our last 11 games and were unlucky to miss top spot to the Azzuri by 2 points, making the finals a very interesting prospect. The first final I think was 1-0 with city getting up in extra time thanks to Louie Rodriguez who was scoring every time he took to the field. This win put us through to the grand final where we were to meet Azzuri for the fourth time after they over came the Lions (I think) in the preliminary final. The Grand Final like our first game in the league ended in a 3-3 draw and with no goals in extra time a shoot out was called for. A controversial move by the coach to sub our keeper for the whole season Stewie McGill for the ex-NT rep keeper Mark Baker before the game came off when he pressured the Azzuri strikers almost making a save and subsequently the next shot deflected off the right post. Blair slotted our last penalty giving us a 5-4 win on penalties and handing us the Cup at our first attempt. Joe Flynn |
